Ben Evans
Following the departure of our former programmer Karena Johnson to take up the post of acting Artistic Director at Manchester’s Contact Theatre, we’re very pleased to welcome Ben Evans as our new Theatre Programmer. Ben initially developed as a theatre director through his work at Oval House, where his company Full Frontal Theatre produced new writing and devised work. As a director, script editor, dramaturg, and workshop leader, Ben has worked at many London theatres, including the Young Vic and Soho Theatre and was for two years a Projects Associate at the Almeida Theatre.
Whilst training as a Director, Ben was the theatre correspondent for the now-defunct website eurogay.co.uk – work which enabled him to experience some of the most ground-breaking queer work around, and has long been an activist with OutRage!, taking an active part in many of their infamous ‘Zaps’.
I have been seduced by the theatre’s well-earned reputation for being at the vanguard of artistic innovation.
he says.
Several years ago, of all of London’s many theatres, Oval House was the venue I chose to work in professionally for the first time. It was the beginning of a wonderful relationship, during which I realised the real commitment Oval audiences have to new and exciting theatre performances. The range of work produced at Oval House holds a mirror up to London – in all its glory. I look forward to seeing work on our stages which explores our lives today, which helps us know a little bit more about who we are – but work which does so with beauty, humour, tragedy, passion, and more than a little mischief!
