Support our Campaign for Accessible Dressing Rooms!

Oval House has long been committed to presenting the work of disabled
artists; approximately 15% of our programming is disability led.

However, our facilities for disabled artists, particularly those using
wheelchairs, are far from adequate. There is no accessible toilet for
disabled people backstage, and the doors are too narrow for wheelchairs,
especially motorised wheelchairs, to fit through.

We have had architects draw up plans for how we can improve these
facilities; this will include:

- Replacing the existing block of showers with an accessible shower
room

- Widening all the doorways to allow
wheelchair access

- Creating a dedicated dressing table
space for wheelchair users


Other improvements will also be made to improve the general look and feel of  the dressing rooms to help all performers feel more comfortable and relaxed  back stage; this will include new floor and wall tiling, new furniture and a very much needed fresh lick of paint!

Making Oval House a space which enables artists with a disability to work
equally alongside other practitioners will benefit not only our existing
users, but open up the space to partnerships with new users who can bring
new productions and experiences to our community. This will help make it
possible for our disabled artists to retain independence of movement and
reduce the stress of worry and coping with inadequate facilities.

We are now fundraising for this exciting project and we hope to get building work underway in summer 2011: imagine what a difference accessible dressing  rooms at Oval House Theatre would make to disabled people both in our local community and in London as a whole!
