How to develop work at Oval House Theatre?

Overview

Are you an artist interested in developing work at Oval House Theatre?

  • Read the following information carefully.
  • If we are the place for you, contact Ben Evans, Head of Theatre Programming. Send information by email or post. Please do not phone with your enquiry.

Our policy is to support the artistic and professional development of talented emerging artists.  Working with companies who may be producing their first or second pieces of work, we take a particular interest in artists for whom exploration of form and content is a priority, and those whose explorations are not represented in the existing ‘mainstream’.  We are know as a sector leader in developing artistic diversity, and have an interest in presenting theatre which is relevant to cosmopolitan London, here and now, in all it’s glory, complexity and challenge.

Oval House operates as a presenting house (on a box-office split), although the majority of work presented has been made and developed here (with in-kind support from Oval House), or is by artists with whom we have a developmental relationship.

Over the last 4 years we have developed very successful seasons of work-in-progress (First Bites) which has resulted in the majority of projects finding producers or financial support – and many have been developed for full-scale production at Oval House.

Our support of companies work has extended to managing their first tours beyond London, thereby giving them a wider market and potential for more funding.  Over the last 5 years we have developed a busy international programme, producing THE BRIDGE  in collaboration with a notable Nigerian company, and as hosts of the Comedia Network within the IETM. We run a successful writers group (currently under commission by BBC 3 counties radio), and take on special projects such as an inquiry into the role and function of a dramaturg in Artistically Diverse work.

We offer an Artist’s Advisor Service, funded by the Arts Council, which has a particular emphasis on diversity, with the capacity to assist artists in fundraising, development, and presentation of work-in-progress.
