Curtain Up: a gala dinner at the May Fair Hotel
A Gala Dinner at the May Fair Hotel
Supporting a new home for theatre in Brixton
On 29 September 2016 our Gala at The May Fair Hotel raised almost £50,000 towards the Capital Campaign. Our sincerest thanks go out to The May Fair Hotel, who generously donated the entire event. Our thanks also go to Jasminder, Amrit and Inderneel Singh, and to our Development Board member Zarir Cama, who facilitated the evening. The Gala was a sparkling reception, followed by three course dinner with some very special performances and guest appearances.
Guests were welcomed by Eugene Simon of Game of Thrones' fame. Eugene introduced Taking Part, a film made by Spectrecom for Ovalhouse:
There was a special welcome Robin Priest, Chair of The Ovalhouse Development Board, who explained about the Ovalhouse #RoadToBrixton.
Deborah Bestwick, Director of Ovalhouse, welcomed Ambreen Razia to the stage. Ambreen performed an excerpt of her show The Diary of a Hounslow Girl.
Storme Toolis, Development Board member and Ovalhouse Alumnus, spoke about her time at Ovalhouse and introduced our second performance of the evening; How to Win Against History.
Storme explained how Ovalhouse gave her the chance to build a successful career as an actress. You might have seen her in The Inbetweeners Movie, BBC’s New Tricks, in her own theatre production at the Barbican of Redefining Juliette - and most recently in the Maltesers campaign for the Paralympics!
How to Win Against History
Seiriol Davies developed a new piece of work at Ovalhouse and went on to receive 5 stars at the Edinburgh Festival.
Our Patron Jenny Sealey directed the Opening Ceremony of the Paralympics and opened her first show with Graeae at Ovalhouse. Jenny introduced her fellow Patron Pierce Brosnan, who was filming in Texas in The Son, and sent us this message:
A live auction followed, with our Patron Paulette Randall giving a toast to Ovalhouse to wish us on our way on the Road to Brixton
Music was provided by the Mississippi Swamp Dogs throughout the evening.
We finished the evening with a set featuring our own Amy Hewett.
