All That Lives by Tatty Hennessy

Henrietta Lacks died in 1951.

But her cells didn’t.

A true story of immortality, exploitation and what rights we have over bodies when we die.

This event is part of the FiRST BiTES season
  • Wed 21 Oct – Sat 24 Oct, 7:45pm

Venue: Upstairs

Please note that, regrettably, the upstairs theatre is not currently accessible for wheelchair users.

“What makes you think you own your own body?”

Henrietta Lacks died of cancer in Baltimore in 1951.

Except she didn’t.

Before she died her doctors took a sample of her cells and kept them alive in a lab. They multiplied. They used them to cure polio. Sent them to space. They’re still alive today.
She never gave permission.  Was never asked for consent. And the same thing could happen to you.

All That Lives is a true story of an African- American woman who changed the course of medicine forever, and asks what rights we have over our own flesh.

Additional information

FiRST BiTES is Ovalhouse’s programme of exciting new works-in-development. They offer an early peek at the work we might be supporting over the next few seasons and give you a chance to offer us your feedback to help shape what each piece becomes. The work might be unfinished or rough around the edges, but the ideas will be vibrant.

FiRST BITE tickets are £5 in advance, £6 on the door.
