Award-winning writer Courttia Newland presents his short manifesto play in a Brixton playground.

Venue: The Peace Garden, St Matthews Church

Come to the play park at the back of St Matthew’s church on Saturday night for floodlights, light mics #justchilling #realtalk. 

Somewhere in the city, a brotherhood of young men debate the relative worths and deficits of Black Power, delivered with a barbershop meets cipher twist. Real Talk has never been this surreal. 

Written by award-winning writer Courttia Newland and directed by The Yard Theatre Founder and National Theatre Resident Director Tarek Iskander.

Manifesto was performed as part of Black Lives, Black Words with Artistic Directors of the Future at the Bush Theatre on Friday March 4 2016.

Courttia Newland is the author of seven works of fiction including his debut, The Scholar. His latest, The Gospel According to Cane, was published in 2013 and has been optioned by Cowboy Films as a TV Serial. As a playwright he has been nominated for the Alfred Fagon award, and the Theatre 503 award. He is an associate lecturer in creative writing at the University of Westminster and is completing a PhD in creative writing.

Tarek Iskander is a freelance writer and director for theatre. He was one of the founders and Associate Artistic Director of the Yard Theatre in Hackney. Previously he was Resident Director at the National Theatre Studio and a regular staff director at the NT. Previous writing and directing credits include Shiver; Qudz; Accidental Death of an Anarchist; Midnight When Trumpets Cry; Human Remains;The Recognition of Sakuntala; Macbeth (the last two were Time Out Critics' Choices). Most recently, he was Associate Director for the hit opera 'The Ice Break', produced by Birmingham Opera Company.
