Everything changes on Gwyn Griffiths' ninth birthday, when five strange gifts unlock the door to a series of exciting discoveries. Gwyn is drawn into an adventure in which he must confront powerful forces from the past if he is to come to terms with his own future – but he has the help of a silver spider from another world...

Io Theatre Company's adaptation of Jenny Nimmo's award-winning book combines breathtaking physical theatre with the rich language of Celtic folk music, evoking the magic and wildness of Wales in a story for both adults and children.

"An inventive and gripping production - the creative staging and clever use of props and music made it both a magical and inspiring theatre experience."
Camden Fringe Festival feedback

Io Theatre Company brings The Snow Spider to life on stage and features original music by James Lark (composer of Miracles at Short Notice - MusicalTalk pick of the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival).

An ensemble of seven actor-musicians create the physicality and movement of the performance, underpinned by exquisite lighting; they evoke the magical world of rural, wild, Wales.  The Snow Spider herself is played by seven hand puppets – one operated by each actor. Creating an otherworldly feel, communicating the strangeness of this tale and reflecting the rich choral language of Welsh folk music, the multi-talented company perform the music live with harp, violins, percussion, ukulele, harmonica, recorder, toy piano and their voices.

Suitable for ages 7+

Recent productions include: Lysistrata  - Watford Palace Theatre production (main house and schools’ tour, January-March 2009) and their own award-winning sell-out production Tony Blair - The Musical (London, Edinburgh and tour, July-September 2007).]
